This painting developed from a single stroke of charcoal.
John stood back and from the canvas and from that one single line he saw the entirety of the painting in his mind.
The reason that Mary is looking directly at the viewer is because this is more than a devotional piece, it’s designed to include the viewer in the painting.
Throughout our lives we will be both aspects of this painting – the held and the one holding.
Remember spring always follows winter.
